New Year, New Stuff, New Events!

So it's been far too long since I have done an update, so tonight's the night! I am working on some new pieces that I will have on ETSY in time for Valentine's Day. Delivering some new work for Crow Valley Pottery up on Orca's Island. I am currently selling work in a pop up gallery created by Local 14 artists called The Art Spot. The Art Spot will be hosting a special Valentine's Day event on Sunday February 12th called 'Give Your Love Local'. There will be bins for food donations to the Oregon Food Bank and a variety of the local businesses in downtown LO will be participating in this event. There will be specials at all the participating businesses as well. And, to top it all off, I will be having a one day sale at Dirty Dishes on Alberta on Sunday February 12th from 12-5. So hopefully I will be able to see some familiar faces at any one of these places/events!

Mudshark Studio Holiday Show

It's about that time of year folks, when artists emerge crazy eyed from their studios ready to share with the world what they have been slaving away at for weeks! I am no exception. Since I do not have a private studio anymore, I have teamed up with some friends (and some strangers) to have a collective show with Mudshark Studios. There will be 21 of us in all showing off our goods. Lots of different pottery styles, some paintings, some metal sculptures and some ceramic sculptures as well. I would love to see as many familiar faces as I can (and maybe bring some less than familiar faces with you!) so hopefully you can make it to one of two weekends. Best selection will be on the first weekend, of course, so get there early! Also on both Fridays of the show, we will have live music, food and free beer! Cheers!

Out of the Fire: A Special Show of Ceramic Art

So I have a show coming up next week at the Doll Gardner Gallery in SW Portland! It sounds like a great show since I know I am in good company with some other really great ceramic artists. All the work featured in the show is to be made so that it can hang on the wall--something very different for an all ceramic show! I have some plates that can either be used traditionally or hung on the wall, as well as some of my textured wall pillows. As usual, it will be a down to the wire event for me and that makes for a whirlwind weekend! Wish me luck and I hope that some of you can make it!

Just wanted to thank all the wonderful people that braved the weather to come out for the Corvallis Fall Festival! I got a lot of great feedback, made some new contacts and met some really great people. I have to give a shout out to my booth neighbors: Aimee Herring, Jennifer Lommers and Sarah Brown. Aimee is a wonderful ceramic artist that is also going to be showing at Local 14 along with me next weekend. Jennifer Lommers is an amazing painter making beautiful and colorful works of art! Both of these ladies kept Jeremy and I laughing all weekend long. And, I scored some great gifts from 'A House In the W oods' children's clothing by Sarah Brown. If you weren't able to make it, maybe next year!

Remember that the Local 14 Art Show starts this Thursday September 29th and runs through Sunday October 2nd at the Forestry Center in Portland. I hope to see some of you there!!

The Latest and Greatest

So as some of you know, my husband and I recently sold our house. Which of course means that I also lost my studio! Currently I am renting space from a friend in Portland at Mudshark Studios. It's been fun to be in a new environment, and definitely takes some getting used to. There are now lots of people and lots of dogs around me all day, making for plenty of distractions! It has also been a bit chaotic because I have to produce enough work for two upcoming shows. The first is the Corvallis Fall Festival on September 24th and 25th and the second is the Local 14 Art Show running from September 29 through October 2nd. Both are known to be great shows and I am looking forward to them both!

Since I am now a full time studio artist, I have been making a greater effort to document some of my processes. Recently I have been making some butter dishes and here are some pics of that process. Enjoy!

First things first, a slab must be rolled and texture is added by rolling a carved roulette across the surface.

The slabs are then cut, folded and manipulated into the basic shape of the butter dish top. Some extra slab allows for a couple of salt and pepper shakers to be made as well.

Smooth slabs are used to create the bases for all the butter dishes and four square 'feet' need to be cut out and attached to each base.

All of the birdie knobs start out as a solid ball of clay and each one is made by hand, making them all individuals!

Once all the knobs are sculpted, they can be attached to the butter dish tops. The finished product is a flock of birdie butter dishes!

Strong Family Pitcher

Some friends asked me to create a special birthday gift for their mother, and this is a little glimpse into how I go about making such a piece.

So first the clay needs to be rolled out into a flat slab.

Once the clay is rolled to the desired thickness, then the fun begins!
I work with a variety of hand carved stamps to create the
designs on the piece. This heart stamp in the middle was
made just for you!

Once the designs are all stamped, then I can form the clay into the basic shape.
This would set over night and then the rest of the piece (bottom, handle and spout) would be assembled the next day.
Once everything is dry, the piece can be bisque fired and finally glazed.

And this is the final piece! I hope your family enjoys this and
I am so happy that you thought of me to create it for you!

So after some serious prepping for this show, it is finally here. I have a new booth setup thanks to the help of Dani Guralnick. She has opened my eyes to the benefits of a white setup and I think it looks great! I also now have actual signage! So far so good at the show, but we always love to see more people. I was contacted by a lovely woman named Kierstin Oliver who is the owner/operator of a great little store on Alberta street called Dirty Dishes. She makes amazing work and I liked the looks of her store, so I decided to take her up on her offer to display a small sampling of my work. Busy evening in the studio! Working on some new large, oval serving dishes in the 'sweater' style. I'm really excited about these beauties! Also working on some new watering cans. Think this design might work better than the first generation. And as usual, you can never make enough mugs when you have a show coming up.

Just in time for spring! Your favorite sweater translated into clay. A new form for Showcase this year, sweater cuff mugs. So far I like the shape a lot, just a bit of a pain to paint the handle a different color from the body. Might have to work on a different handle shape to make that a bit easier. But as usual bright, fun and full of button detail!

So these are some new little planters I am working on. They remind me of cartoon pants, so I have given them the name of 'Fancy Pants Pots'! The ones in this photograph are mini pots that are perfect for small plant (in my case succulents) starts. Love them!

I love these little trinkets that sit on my windowsill. The bottles were found when digging in my back yard and I made the little bird of course. They are perfect for this spot and they brighten up my overcast day.

Salt Cellars on ETSY

It sure has been a while since I have posted anything new anywhere! But, with the holidays over, I have no excuses--back to the grindstone. I have put some lovely new salt cellars up on ETSY with the help of my new camera and the recently constructed light box. The pictures are definitely better than those that I took with natural light, but I still have so much to learn about how to use my camera and photo shop! Off to take more pictures!

Topiary Attempt part I

So I have had my cuttings now for a few days and they have had some time to callous over, and now it is time to plant them! Here is what I have for the project:

12 inch cone topiary form
florist wire
sphagnum moss (moistened)
bamboo skewer
wire cutters
florist pins
about 45 succulent cuttings

The form seemed a little too open to me, so I used the floral wire to wrap it more tightly. I am hoping this will help to hold the moss more securely when I stuff it into the form.

Topiary Attempt part II

I stuffed the wire wrapped form with moistened sphagnum moss. You can buy this moss at your local garden center.

After the moss has been tightly packed into the form, I use a bamboo skewer to poke a hole into the moss for the stems of the succulents. A lot of my cuttings were either heavy or had short stems, so I used floral pins to lock them in place.

I just worked my way around the form until I ran out of cuttings, also trying to think about balance, color and form. The turning wheel really helps you keep track of what is going on with the rest of your form while you're working. I definitely need some more cuttings, there are still a few bare spots. This is a 12 inch tall cone shaped topiary and I had somewhere around 45 cutting when I started. Everything I have read says you'll need about 100 cutting for every 12 square inches. So after filling in a few bare spots, all I need to do is finish up the planter I am making for this to rest in and put it in a dimly lit area for the roots to grow. I'll post pictures when it's fully complete!

I'm super excited about the potential of this new piece! It's a lantern and I a can't wait to start making some more, perhaps even make some that are electric for indoors. There is still a ways to go, but so far I like it. Absolutely adorable!

Vacation Mission: Create Succulent Topiary

Since I am on vacation from teaching for the next two weeks, I have decided that the time has come for me to tackle the project of making a succulent topiary. I have made a living wreath in the past with mild success, mostly due to lack of enough cuttings, and now I would like to try a topiary. Just received my package of cuttings from Succulents Galore on Etsy and they look great! She really picked a nice variety. I am just waiting on the form to arrive and then the fun begins. Lake Oswego Holiday Market

This is my first time doing this show and it looks like it could be a lot of fun. There are tons of vendors, a giant Christmas tree, pictures with Santa and even horse drawn carriage rides! It is an outdoor market that is modeled after traditional European holiday markets and so far the weather forecasters are calling for a dry weekend. So no excuses, come on out to support your local business men and women! The market runs from 12-8 on Saturday the 4th and from 10-3 on Sunday the 5th. See you there!

Super RAD Holiday Show

One day only! I will be participating once again in the Super RAD PDX Holiday Social this coming Saturday. It is my first show of this year's holiday season and it's a great one. Not only will there be an amazing array of independent local artists, there will also be free beer, live music and a silent auction! The proceeds from the auction will directly benefit Ride Connection, a local nonprofit that provides transportation to the elderly and those in need. Portland Nursery will also be kicking off their holiday season that day, so it is sure to be a bustling shopping experience. Like Christmas!

It never ceases to amaze me how after all these years of loading and unloading kilns, that every time I open a glaze kiln it's always exciting! Most of us in the biz refer to it being like Christmas, and it is. Your precious little gems that you spent all that time making and then glazing are finely coming to fruition. It's especially awesome when things turn out right when you open the kiln lid. Oh the joy!

From Start to Finish

So earlier I posted some of my sketches and the result of those sketches in half done form (I've posted them again for your convenience). I often forget to take photos once a piece is finished because usually there is some event that I need to get the work too. Like many artists I am a bit of a procrastinator or as I like to say I feel more creative under pressure! There is some truth to that because whenever I am faced with a deadline I always come up with some new idea and rather than waiting for the next event to unveil it, I push myself to get it done now. That usually means I am unloading a kiln the night before or even the day of a sale! Not unusual for potters. So in an attempt for self improvement, here are the finished results of the large bottle forms I showed in an earlier post. They range in height from 8 inches to 15 inches to give you an idea of scale. Each piece has a large image featured on it and text that is either inspired by that image or just words that inspire me. To accentuate the texture they are finished with a variety of color stains and glaze on the tops, arms, and bottom. I think they are quite fun!

Workin' hard for the money!

So Christmas is less than 60 days away and that means it's time to kick it into high gear! I am really excited about the work I am making and also the new venues that I will be showing it in. You can now find my work in Open Door Gallery on Whidbey Island and soon to be in ART Elements Gallery in downtown Newberg! Like last year, I will also be showing at the Arts Center in Corvallis--always one of my favorites! This year you can expect some really cute gift ideas for the holiday like salt cellars, cream and sugar sets and of course butter dishes. I love the combination of all over texture with the simple addition of text across the top. Sweet and simple. Enough talk! Back to work! If you need me, I'll be in the studio!

Local 14 is coming!!!

This week is a true test of my abilities considering that I just finished Clay Fest last weekend and am preparing for Local 14 this coming weekend! Hopefully I'll keep my cool because I am really excited about this show. It has been going for the past 43 years! It's put on by a great group of women and is a showcase of local talent. The show opens with a gala event on Thursday night and regular show hours are Friday 10 AM - 9 PM, Saturday & Sunday 10 AM - 5 PM. It's at the Forestry Center by the Zoo so ride the MAX if you don't feel like driving! I hope some of you will be able to make it. Become a fan of Local 14 on facebook too!

On another note, I finished my first prototype of a watering can recently, and although it's cute as a button, I need to go back to the drawing board. It does not pour as well as I would like it too. This is always the challenge of making functional work. It has to look good and work well! I posted some pics so you can see how it ended up and I also posted some of my new succulent pots!

Clay Fest and New Things

I have been working hard getting new work ready for Clay Fest this coming weekend! I am really excited to do this show. I have never done it before, but from what I can tell it's a lot like Showcase here in Portland but smaller and in Eugene of course! If anyone is going to be in that area on the 8th through the 10th of this month, you should swing by the fair grounds and see the show. It's free to get in and it's an all ceramic show featuring the awesome work of you know who! Insert my name into your brain:) I'm also including some pics of some of my new work that I am currently making. I've even included a picture of my sketches so that you can see how my ideas start and then are created into tangible objects! And, just because it makes me happy when I look at it, I have posted a picture of my potted up succulents that are for sale. Currently they reside on my east window of my sun room, but they were just so pretty, I couldn't resist a photo! Hope to see some of you guys at Clay Fest!

Movin' On

So the West Linn Arts Festival was not the best show I've done in terms of sales. Honestly, that is what I expected going into it, so it makes the outcome less disappointing. It was however, a beautiful venue with loads of really good artists! So, I can only blame the economy for the lack of sales all around since it couldn't have been the work. Also, I would like to thank all of you who did come out to support both myself and the show! With that show over with, it is now time to focus on Clay Fest in Eugene and Local 14 here in Portland, both next month! I am really excited about both of these shows and I have started working on some new pieces that I hope to have ready by then. One of the new forms I am working on is a ceramic watering can! The idea was proposed to me a while back by a customer who had purchased a cake plate from me. Sometime it takes a while for an idea to make it all the way into a finished form, but better late then never! I am also working on some new really cute succulent planters and some new large scale teapots. I really hope that the community will come out and show some support for their local artisans by buying some work. Let's face it, we can't stay in business unless people buy! So think local and hand made for your upcoming holiday needs!!!!

West Linn Arts Festival

I have never done this show before, and I would love to see some people coming out to support not only me, but artists from the community in general! Well I guess I was bound to have a bad year at Silverton, and it happens to be this year. Sales were way down for myself as well as the surrounding artists. I am hoping that this is not an indication for the rest of the sales I have planned this year. I will try to be positive and keep moving forward! There was a bracelet at the sale and it read, "Creativity takes courage." I'll try to be brave!

Start with a corner

So my friend Dani introduced me to the wonderful little nursery on Sauvie Island called Cistus this last weekend. It was awesome! If you're into weird/unusual plants, this is the place for you. Also, since recently I have become a succulent addict, they have an amazing array of agave, yucca, aloe and sedum for both indoor and out. So many plants and not enough money or a plan for them all! I did pick up a few things though, and I have begun a new project in my yard starting with what was a neglected corner. I had a lot of fun putting this together and liked how it is far less intimidating to just start with a small section and not have to worry about the larger whole just yet. The corner already had a beautiful, tall zebra grass and about a zillion hens and chicks around it, so that was my platform to start with. I wanted to go with sort of a low maintenance garden with mostly drought tolerant plants and hopefully after the first year or so, it will become just that! So far so good, and as the year progresses I'll move the garden down the fence line. I can't wait until next spring!

Had a lot of fun at the sale, would have liked to have a few more sales, but I realize that peoples pockets are not as deep as they once were. Still, it was an awesome turn out, the music was great (thank you Ian and Jeremy) and the beer was a flowin'! Now it's time to get back into the studio to prepare for Silverton Fine Arts Festival. Thankfully my dahlias are starting bloom and should supply me with all the inspiration I need! By the way, if anyone has dahlia growing secrets, I would love to hear them! Oh! How could I forget?! The End Has Arrived

So it's official. I have delivered my last plate to the bustling metropolis that is Corvallis, Oregon. Today my lovely husband and I made the arduous journey down I-5 to hand over what has been my task over the past 6 months. I have to say that I am rather excited about not having to make any more of these plates, but also that it was not nearly as terrible as I expected it to be. After accomplishing something on this scale, I now know that I am capable of making the same thing over and over and over again. It makes the 150 I had to make for my wedding a few years back seem like child's play! Other than that, I participated in Milwaukie's second 1st Friday earlier this month. It was ok. It's so new that I don't know how many people even know it's going on or are prepared to buy when they encounter such fine art! I'll definitely try it again because it is worth seeing if it picks up as it gains experience. I am also working on my new "sweater cuff" line. These new pieces are simply scrumptious! I think I have really gone beyond my normal level of cuteness here, but I just can't help myself. Look for a smattering of these new pieces to be in my upcoming shows!

Why is it that writing about myself if always so intimidating? I wish that I was a little more full of myself so that I would have no problem sitting down and poetically phrasing my relatively normal life. The funny thing about an artist bio is that it doesn't even need to be long or even that eloquent. It just needs to speak the facts ma'am. Well off I go. Wish me luck!

Ceramic Showcase is coming!!!

So I have been feverishly working all week on getting ready for the OPA Ceramic Showcase coming up this weekend. It's always interesting to see how many things you can try and do in a very short amount of time. If anything, it teaches you how well you can cope with stress and how strong your hair is when you try to pull it out! If you are unaware, Showcase (as we potters refer to it) is a huge pottery show/sale at the Oregon Convention Center. It is FREE and easy to get to by MAX. There are something like 200 potters showcasing their work and I will be one of them! Stop by booth B-1, that's where I'll be! The event runs from Friday to Sunday, April 30th-May 2nd. Please support your local artisans and come check it out!! Hope to see you there!

So I recently added some items to etsy. Some more of my tried and true mini square plates in really fun colors and designs. I am really excited about my little bud vases that I have added. They are just perfect for pansies, which is a flower I love to cut but is too small for most vases! They are a ton of fun for me to make and I am looking forward to the challenge of making a really large version for the Ceramic Showcase in a few months. Well it has finally begun. I have now surpassed 100 plates made for my big commission. Only a mere 500 more to go! I'm sure I'll be going crazy around the 250 mark, but if I can get through this it will be the biggest order I have ever done. I'm excited to be doing this and it will be a big accomplishment for me to focus on just one thing for that long. On another note, I have finally sold something from ETSY! It makes me happy to see that someone from Texas that I don't even know found little ole me in Oregon and bought some of my stuff! Hopefully it will only continue to bring success. I am going to try and be a better blogger this year as well. It is not easy for me to set aside time to be on the computer, but I am determined! Here's to a new year!

Ok people! It is that time of year again when artist's crawl out of the woodwork and invite you into their studios for a sale!! I will be no exception this year. Ron Linn, Bob McIlhattan, and I will be having our annual sale out on Bob's property in Gresham. It's the same format as last year which means it will be two weekends long so that we can fire the wood fire kiln. The only difference this year will be that I will actually have something in the kiln this time!! I have a new body of work that I am really excited about, as well as some wall pieces, which is a departure from the usual for me.

Hello all!! I know, I know, this is a very unusual time of year for me to be posting something, but I am trying to get myself in gear and show more!! I am the featured artist for the month of September at a shop in NE Portland called Quirks of Art. They are located in the Hollywood district on 40th between Halsey and Sandy. There will be a wine tasting reception that I will be present for on the 16th of September. Also, on the 22, 23, and 24 of September I will be joining a group of artists at Dusty Creek Bead store on 4848 SE Division for a weekend art sale. I just wanted to thank all those who came out to see me last Saturday. I am told that this year's spring sale was relatively successful. I have never done it before, so I have nothing to compare it too. I feel as though it was worth my seven hours of hanging out at Rimsky's Korsacoffee house.
